“I am writing to properly thank you for your teaching last November on Homosexuality and the Church. The trainees so valued your insight and were particularly struck by your ability to be firm in Scripture while being loving, kind and understanding. Thank you for modeling such attributes for us and thank you for reminding us that we are all in need of salvation and redemption. We are grateful for your ministry and look forward to working with you further in 2015.”
Debbie Allen, Assistant Director of Counseling, River Lakes Community Church, Bakersfield, CA.

“Thanks so much for the recent testimonies shared in your newsletter. I am so grateful for His Way Out Ministries which provides encouragement and support for those of us that hurting emotionally and spiritually. I have always felt that sexual sin, particularly homosexuality, was a worse sin than most of the others we know about, (and do). It was not until your direction to 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 did I see the truth about how God sees all sin. Thank you for helping with this very complex issue.”
Rebecca Moreno, Bakersfield, CA.

“I have so admired your ministry through the years. You help so many people, including people in my family and church family. I continue to pray God’s blessings over you and your ministry.”

Dear His Way Out Ministries…

As a mentor/pastor, what is my role when helping an individual with unwanted same-sex attraction?

In many respects, take homosexuality completely out of the equation. The mentoring or discipleship process offered by a mentor/pastor is ultimately intended to build a genuine and true relationship between the individual and God rather than between the individual and the mentor/pastor. Constantly point the individual to the source of healing and encourage him/her to seek the Healer. Do not expect a quick fix. Change does not happen overnight. Healing and transformation occurs from the inside, out. As a mentor/pastor, you are not expected to know everything. However, you can go with the individual to the One that does. Never, ever minimize the importance and significance of speaking into the life of the individual. Your presence alone with speak volumes.

In my experience, the ones who I have known who have successfully left homosexuality are those who have relinquished complete control of their lives to the Holy Spirit. The person becomes a lover of God and becomes focused on building His Kingdom and destroying the works of the evil one. Apart from Christ, we can do nothing. For anyone to maintain or achieve any level of purity he must begin to cultivate a close communion with the Lord. Truly, self-control is a fruit of walking with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). Only God can bring about the changes the individual desires. Praying and worshipping at the beginning of each and every day, reading God’s Word while maintaining fellowship with the Body of Christ will all help bring about victory. No matter what our feelings or problems, we all must die to ourselves and follow Christ. God is not to be used simply as a means to an end. He is our goal.

Pastor Phillip Lee

Pastor Phillip Lee RHT04Many, many years ago, I became convinced I was to go to Guyana, South America and remain on the mission field for a year. Struggling a bit with what I believed was a clear directive of the Holy Spirit, I counseled with a number of individuals with the majority confirming and encouraging me to follow through with just a couple of individuals not so convinced.

Ultimately, there I am 36,000 feet in the air, on my way to Guyana and then it hits. “Are you crazy? What are you doing?”

You see, I had sold everything – my truck, my house, household and personal possessions – down to what I could get into just two suit cases.

The ultimate was having to find a new home for my dog. I am a huge dog lover to the point that I say even today, “You can take my new truck, my condo, everything I’ve got – but heaven help you if you mess with my dogs. You just might go home to be with Jesus much sooner than you anticipated!” Oh, just kidding.

It was during my flight that it dawned on me I really didn’t have clarity in terms of what I was to do when I got to Guyana. I know, I know. But I knew I was to go. Now, I am convinced what I am about to share will leave some of you asking, “Really, seriously?” As I stepped off the jet way on to Guyanese soil, I instantaneously, immediately knew what I was to do in Guyana. I was to travel from village to village, staying about three months in each village, teaching personal evangelism and leading teams to go out in their respective villages (communities) and share the Gospel.  Now, once again, this was many years ago, when personal witnessing and evangelism was foreign to most Guyanese. For the most part, the view and opinion of many Guyanese Christians was, “Isn’t that the Pastors job?”

One day in a village called Mahaica, I was leading a team of approximately 6 individuals when we came upon a house with a man sitting on the front steps of his home. As we approached, I immediately noticed by his body language he really didn’t want to be bothered. However, when I asked if we could talk to him, he agreed. I also noticed that his left foot was bandaged and appeared to be swollen to 3-4 times normal foot size. As we began to share Jesus with him, his whole manner began to soften and change. At one point, he interrupted me and said, “I thought all you wanted was money just like another group that came by some time ago that was handing out religious material.”

Assuring him we did not want money, I asked about his injured foot. He shared he had cut it while gathering wood in the jungle and it was now severely infected bordering on gangrene. I asked if we could pray for God to heal his foot. I will never, ever forget his facial expression and reply. A look of dismay brought, “You don’t want money and you want to pray for me?”

The next morning was Sunday and I was to share at the church in Mahaica. Wanting to get settled and fully prepared before the Sunday morning service began, I arrived early. I was met by two individuals that participated in yesterday’s evangelism team. Standing at the entrance of the church, they said, “Phillip, look toward the front of the church.” There sitting on the front row was the man we had prayed for yesterday. Lloyd (the man’s name) was sitting there weeping. As I approached him and our eyes met, he said, “Look – pointing at his foot.” God had completely healed his foot. That Sunday, Lloyd surrendered his life to Christ Jesus and ultimately became a pillar of the Mahaica church.

As we stand upon the threshold of a New Year, I am fully persuaded God is asking , “Will you go to places, people, surroundings and atmospheres that you would just as soon not go?”

Jesus told His disciples very clearly to “go…and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)

That was His last injunction to them before He left this earth. Jesus, our perfect Role Model,  poured Himself out for people (all people) and He intends His followers to do the same. Clearly, if Jesus made evangelism the subject of His last command to His disciples on earth, then it must be important. If we love Him and seek to obey Him, then we must carry it out.

Witnessing and evangelizing  is not an optional extra. It is a major part of the obedience of the whole Church. The Church, Peter reminds us, exists not least to “declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were no people but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10)

I would be the first to admit that love is the most attractive quality in the world. And it lies at the very heart of true Christianity. Who knows just how many “Lloyd’s” God has just waiting for you to come along. The God you and I worship is a missionary God. And so we, too, should be committed to mission.

“The people who know their God will be strong and take action.” (Daniel 11:32)

This is all about people – all people.

Thanks, Rock Harbor Church!
On Sunday, November 30, 2014, His Way Out Ministries had the privilege of offering a message titled “Homosexuality: A Crisis of Truth” at Rock Harbor Church in Bakersfield, CA. At the conclusion of the Sunday morning service, a lined formed with many taking opportunity to ask questions in order to be better equipped in offering a godly reply thereby turning the often controversy regarding homosexuality into ministry. Today, thankfully, there are churches like Rock Harbor Church that are not sidestepping either truth or grace with regard to homosexuality but are committed to speaking clear truth about this issue and equally committed to being graceful toward every person.

Sunday January 18th, Hope Community Church, Pico Rivera CA

By invitation of Pastors Drew and Tamara Koen, during the two Sunday morning services at 9:00am and 11:00am, Pastor Phillip Lee will be sharing a message titled A Christian Response to Homosexuality. One of the most common reasons people don’t know how to respond to homosexuality is fear. We, as Ambassadors for Christ Jesus, must learn to call fear for what it is – a barrier to accomplishing God’s will for our lives and for our churches. Paul reminded Timothy that he was not given a spirit of fear and neither are we (2 Timothy 1:7).

Next Meeting, Saturday January 24, 2015

As we will soon say goodbye to another year, I am always amazed by God’s faithfulness to His Way Out Ministries as I recall just a few of the many wonderful things He has done.

At the beginning of 2014, the Holy Spirit reminded us that, “You will be witnesses of Me,” rather than, “witnesses of what I can do.”

January also included speaking and exhibiting opportunities at the Calvary Bible Church ‘Missions Conference’ in Bakersfield.

In February, we began to receive calls and emails from individuals, families and churches in Las Vegas seeking help, encouragement and support.

March brought a wonderful opportunity to share with youth at Northside Church in Bakersfield about a God that restores from the brokenness of same-sex attraction.

In April, several Christian counselors in our area reaffirmed their partnership with us in continuing to offer biblical counseling to those with unwanted same-sex attraction.

In May, His Way Out Ministries was invited to be a guest on “Open Up With Don and Tina,” a TV talk show drawing worldwide viewers. Also, His Way Out Ministries shared and taught about freedom from same-sex attraction in Christ Jesus to the staff and Christian counselors of Grace Baptist Church in Santa Clarita, CA.

The month of June brought Maria Branford from Trinidad and Tobago with Hospital Christian Fellowship to join us at our office for two weeks. During Maria’s stay with us, we attended the Restored Hope Network Conference in Portland, OR.

In July, His Way Out Ministries was invited by Kern Christian Church in Lake Isabella, CA to share a message titled “A Christian Response to Homosexuality” which was enthusiastically received.

August brought a considerable increase of both individuals seeking ministry with unwanted same-sex attraction as well as families and marriages impacted by the same. Thankfully and gratefully, Ginny Mitchell who leads our Wives Group and Craig and Karen Fulwyer who leads our Friends and Family Group were there to offer encouragement and support.

In September, His Way Out Ministries was scheduled to speak at Pomona First Baptist Church in Pomona, CA. Unfortunately, that was interrupted by my spending a few days in the hospital. However, Senior Pastor, Glen Gunderson, pulled workshop materials from past HWOM visits and the message “Homosexuality and the Reality of Change” was presented with a huge appreciation offered by those in attendance.

October enabled His Way Out Ministries to once again return to the “Open Up With Don and Tina Show” and continue spreading the Good News about freedom from same-sex attraction in Christ Jesus.

Group counseling and individual counseling continued throughout the year touching hundreds and hundreds of lives – locally and around the world.

In November, HWOM facilitated a 3-hour workshop for pastoral lay counselors at River Lakes Community Church in Bakersfield and shared a message titled “Homosexuality: A Crisis of Truth” at Rock Harbor Church in Bakersfield.

Well, that brings us to December 2014. With the holidays in full swing, HWOM is already beginning to schedule numerous events and speaking opportunities for 2015.

I remain grateful to the HWOM Executive Board: Pastor Don and Michelle McLean, George Bertand, who also keeps our books in tiptop shape and helps each month with our Newsletter, and Craig Fulwyler, as well as the HWOM Advisory Council: Pastor Diane Ussery, Pastor Dan Hellyer, Steve and Alonna Wentland, Karen Fulwyler, Ginny Mitchell, Pastor Keith Fultz and Pastor Steven Yeary, for their constant support and encouragement. And…

To each of you who continually bless us by your encouragement, ministry participation, monthly financial support, offerings and prayers, we remain truly grateful!

World AIDS Day
December 1, 2014

“And behold a leper came and worshiped Him (Jesus), saying, ‘Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.’ Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him saying, ‘I am willing, be cleansed.'” (Matthew 8:23)

The AIDS pandemic continues to affect millions of people around the world. Many church organizations in countries around the world continue to be active in seeking to respond to the on-going AIDS crisis. Thankfully, many Christian organizations continue to believe that the Biblical set of values, found in the Bible, taking personal responsibility to help stamp out HIV infection, and nonjudgmental attitudes are primary ways to help in the AIDS crisis.

For me, HIV/AIDS is far more than professional – it’s personal. If you are like me, you often go for long periods of time without ever taking stock of the contents of your address book. And if you are really like me, your address book is full of notes, comments and names that have been both penciled in and inked in, arrows drawn to connect various pieces of information and generally a hodgepodge of stuff reflecting numerous years of life’s special moments, dates and especially, people.

As the fight against the AIDS pandemic continues, there remains a legitimate concern that public awareness campaigns, education, and condom distribution are simply not working to stop the disease. At the same time, the quest by researchers to find a cure continues.

Experts agree the answer to stopping the AIDS pandemic globally is not treatment, but prevention. They also agree that the best hope for prevention lies in changing human behavior. Never has the need and the opportunity for the Christian community to take the lead in responding to this present crisis with conviction and compassion been greater.

Many local churches, missionary agencies, faith-based organizations and Christian hospitals are making a difference on the front lines of this remaining crisis around the world. They teach and model biblical principles of abstinence and marital fidelity. They offer comfort without condemnation to those living with HIV/AIDS. They provide loving care for multitudes of widows and orphans.

Above all, they are called and equipped to meet the spiritual needs of men, women and children affected by this on-going pandemic.

It is an undeniable tragic fact that nations, communities and families have lost leaders of today and tomorrow. Health care systems have been overwhelmed, economies undermined, and schools robbed of both students and teachers. I remain convinced the continuing global tragedy cries out for a united Christian response.

While I certainly have no desire to sound like a prophet of doom, I could not deny the blatant realization of reading through my address book. The A’s, B’s, C’s, thumbing all the way through to “Z,” only to have each alphabetical section bring a wave of emotion. Each page of every section reflected at least one and often two names that are no longer with us. Enough.

God has given us Biblical principles to halt HIV infections and to bring hope to those whose lives have been devastated by this deadly disease. Jesus Christ has shown us how to teach, minister, lead, and live, and offers the sick and suffering eternal hope through the Gospel.

With the Lord’s help, we can accomplish what the world considers impossible. “With man this is impossible,” Jesus once told His astonished disciples, “but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)

It is my continued hope and prayer that when the history of the 21st Century is written, may it be said of The Church of Jesus Christ, that we showed the love of Christ by leading the way in defeating HIV/AIDS. This is all about people.

Merry Christmas and a Safe and Blessed New Year!

by Steve Wentland, Ed.D.O.L.

When I ask for forgiveness it brings me often to tears. My heart is moved and my emotions kick-in. I cry, and often I cry for some time. I do not understand why repentance has aspects of crying, humbleness, and wanting to be a better person but it does. I am glad for that!

I have had a few times in my life when God came in like a flood – I found myself in a state of complete brokenness, as if I was at the Jordan River being baptized by John. I continued throughout the day and many times for days on end asking God for forgiveness. I would cry the whole time – every time I was alone I would be moved to just cry and say ‘I am sorry’. Many times I did not know why and could not tell you what wrongs I was sorry about, but I just wanted to be clean – to be washed.

Sin can have such a hold on our lives. We often do not even recognize its effect and all the consequences our sin brought to us – but God does. He wants us clean. Not just what we remember but even what we do not recollect.

We have what the Bible says are ‘secret sins’. Wrongs that we have hid from others, or we ‘think’ they are hid. Often we never address ‘secret sins’, allowing them to continue in our lives. We are bound and hindered by wrong actions, thoughts, decisions that refrain the blessing and wholeness of God to infiltrate out lives. David asked for forgiveness for secret sins. He knew their influence and the damage these sins produce.

I believe it is the single most destructive area of our lives – to be hiding wrongs. We can never be completely free or clean unless we ask for and acknowledge that we need help from past secret behavior. Secret sins are and can be forgiven – God wants to enter with you into a state of brokenness and our asking for forgiveness.

Next time you are moved to say, “I am sorry God, forgive me of my sins,” do not forget those hidden sins – God wants you to healed and cleansed from them also. Be a better person tomorrow than you are today – by asking for forgiveness from all sins – the obvious and the hidden.
