Today, with numbers increasing regarding individuals too afraid to talk about the societal shifts that have occurred and continue to unfold regarding homosexuality and related issues, I assure you, behind the scenes, it is a whole different game.

Based upon individuals and families contacting His Way Out Ministries and my travels through churches of various denominations here in America and overseas, congregation members, by in large, are not being informed, equipped, or educated on the complexities of same-sex attraction and related issues, and as a result are paying a very high price, if not feeling like failures.

Or, as one man shared with me recently, “We’re getting slammed due to a lack of knowledge and practical tools that would help us be more effective in reasoning with and reaching those that promote the ‘gay is good’ notion.”

Indeed, “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)

It is an irrefutable fact homosexual activists are highly organized, have a strategic plan and are gaining public acceptance with regard to their beliefs and cause. Today, with everyone knowing at least one person who experiences same-sex attraction, why are we, the Church, still so ill-equipped to help those which are being held captive by the brokenness of same-sex attraction? Especially, when it comes to congregation members that are clearly and undeniably hungry to be educated and enlightened.

We are living in a time when Scriptural teaching and clarity regarding homosexual practice should be abundantly clear and unequivocal.

Today, no faithful follower of Christ Jesus should be puzzled or left wondering what the belief of their respective church is on the topic. However, many Christians are wondering because they’ve never once heard it addressed. Frankly, while this is most definitely a shame and beyond tragic, it does explain why many Christians are coming to the conclusion that matters of sexual morality are unimportant, and a Christian is left free to decide for himself what is acceptable and what is not.

The Apostle Paul states clearly he is “not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes,” (Romans 1:6) yet far too many are withholding God’s truth. Is it fear, is it embarrassment causing some to steer away from truth and the unwillingness to step too deeply into it?

Whatever the cause, many Christians are becoming confused because they do not know what true Christianity is, what the Bible teaches and what is required of each and every faithful follower of Christ Jesus largely because they are not being taught the Bible in its entirety.

Not only are believers falling into homosexual sin and legitimizing it but many within the uninformed Church are applauding them as they do. Laws have been changed, same-sex marriage is now legal throughout America and educational systems are becoming more tolerant of homosexual practice by falsely teaching pro-homosexual lessons through health education curriculum. With far too many churches and Christian organizations giving a friendly nod to gay ideology, making Isaiah’s famous warning more relevant than ever:

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)

I, for one, continue to believe the Church remains God’s vehicle to reach wounded, broken, hurting humanity. In a world that is rapidly spinning toward accepting everything and tolerating anything, we, the Church, must be very, very careful. God has and He is setting opportunity before us. The Gospel must be the priority for the homosexual – just as it must be for each and every faithful follower of Christ Jesus.

Regardless of how we all have been inundated through the media, movies, television, schools, politics, the internet, and tragically in some cases by various faiths promoting, “once gay always gay,” and “can’t change,” it is well past time for the Church to come out of the closet, educate itself, and replace the many lies and myths about homosexuality being campaigned by pro-gay activists, with the real Scriptural truths and facts about same-sex attraction.

I freely admit there is a price to be paid today for discipling men and women according to all of Christ’s teachings – especially with our present culture pushing for greater and greater approval of iniquity. However, the gospel of Christ remains “the power of God unto salvation for all who believe.” (Romans 1:16)

It seems to me no one need fear God’s judgment when teaching and proclaiming Biblical holiness, as Paul said in Romans 8:36, “but in all these things we will be more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

If we, the Christian community, remain unwilling to awaken from our slumber and become willing to share God’s Word, His truth, as it pertains to homosexual practice, there can be no doubt the biggest losers will undoubtedly be homosexual men and women who (should things continue as they are) just may continue to get everything they want, but will definitely be denied The One whom they truly need.

God has entrusted us with great responsibility, opportunity and privilege.

“Once gay, always gay,” is a common sentiment in the homosexual community. Heaven knows, I bought into and used to preach all that false propaganda once myself. Many gays and lesbians truly feel that they were born that way. They will be very frank and honest by stating that they do not ever remember making a conscious choice to be drawn to someone of their own sex. So, common logic says, homosexuality must be genetic or hormonal, and there is nothing that can be done about it.

I will admit that such thinking sounds a bit logical, but it is not based in truth. Both the Holy Scriptures and an abundance of secular literature provide evidence that homosexuality, though deeply ingrained and even habitually practiced, can be overcome, both as a lifestyle and as an identity.

God does not create homosexuals. If He did, He would not have any business judging their behavior as sinful and unnatural…something He devotes a great deal of His time doing in His Word. (Romans 1:26 -27) I mean, why would God create something contrary to Himself? God created both sexes to be compliments and counterparts to each other and to live in a hetero-sexual, monogamous relationship. Any and every perversion of His divine intent (including promiscuity, adultery, bi-sexuality, homosexuality, prostitution, etc.) is clearly and repeatedly condemned in Scripture. (I Corinthians 6:9; Ephesians 5:5; Romans 1:24-27; Galatians 5:10-21)

As much as we might like, no amount of argument or attempts at justification is going to change God’s standard. A very clear and emphatic choice must be made by each person. Each person must ask themselves this question, just as I had to 33 years ago, “Will I obey God’s Word, or seek to reinterpret it another way in order to fulfill my sexual desires?”

I have never been able to find one, not one, positive statement about homosexuality in the entire Word of God. Indeed, I found Jesus to be abundantly clear in His teachings when He states that we have only two appointed options … heterosexual monogamous marriage or abstinence. So, let’s take homosexuality completely out of the equation and state it this way. Are you single? If the answer is “yes.” Then you are not to be sexually intimate with anyone. Also, for those viewing the subject of homosexuality as one of civil rights. This is not about civil rights. This is clearly an issue of morals.

Certainly homosexuals can change: 1 Corinthians 6:11. It is extremely important to know that each person seeking to overcome homosexuality is uniquely different. This was very true of my own journey out of the gay lifestyle. Many who have exited from homosexuality span a wide variety of ages, personalities, occupations, and various church denominations. Some ex-gays and former lesbians were once consumed and totally immersed in the homosexual subculture of cities like San Francisco, New York City, and Los Angeles. I, myself, spent many, many years submerged in large city gay communities. While others endured, and still endure, a silent struggle. Never confiding in anyone, never having a homosexual experience… but, in an intense battle with same-sex fantasies and desire.

There is no identical plan of action for healing from homosexuality. No “quick fix” or “one-two-three” formula. A person’s deliverance from homosexuality comes from a Person, rather than a method or even a program. That Person is, has always been and will always be, Jesus Christ.

The Bible speaks of transformation in a variety of ways: as being recreated in the inner person, as having the mind of Christ, as having God’s law written on our heart and mind, as walking by the Spirit and not the flesh, as being a new creation, and as being reborn.

All Christians face the decision of accepting or rejecting Christ’s Lordship. Coming out of homosexuality requires deep emotional healing and a restructuring of one’s whole identity. As our Creator, God, is the only One who knows exactly how to restore our personality. I remember so vividly, when coming to know Christ at the age of 35, what it meant for the first time in my life to be a man. But more importantly, what it meant to be a godly man. I liked it then. I like it still. Or, as I have heard it sung in a wonderful old song…”I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now.”

Change? Yes, with all the evidence on God’s side.

First and foremost, let’s put even this crisis in its proper context. Embrace the promise of Romans 8:28 that God makes everything – even calamities – work for our good. Admittedly, it is often very excruciating to wait for the ‘good’ to work. I mean, when it seems that everything is literally coming apart at the seams, it’s hard to consider if anything good will really come out of misery.

  • My first encouragement is to learn as much as you can about the causes of homosexuality. Simply knowing it is wrong is not even close to being enough.
  • Don’t run the matter into the ground every time you see your son or daughter. Often, there can be a good reason(s) for not dealing with a problem right now.
  • Do everything you can to keep the lines of communication open and maintain your relationship. If you feel you have been batting your head against the wall seeking resolution of ‘the problem,’ take a rest. It may not be God’s time to deal with the issue.
  • Make sure your son or daughter is aware of your belief and position regarding homosexual practice. Heaven knows, God can deal with and use our mistakes but He cannot deal with our inaction. Be clear and precise.
  • Do not argue about homosexuality. The very moment the conversation erupts into anger – drop it! Badgering will only produce pushing the individual in the wrong direction. Many problems and issues in life are often solved very indirectly; not when we are consciously dealing with them, but when we are going about our normal lives.
  • It is imperative to distinguish between “acceptance and approval.” It is important to separate, both in our own minds and to our loved ones, their individual worth from the acts of homosexuality they may be committing.
  • Stay completely away from Christian cliches such as: “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,” and “Love the sinner but hate the sin.” Christian cliches only reinforce the belief of many with same-sex attraction that the Christian community is unwilling to truly educate themselves on the complexities of same-sex attraction.
  • Do not hesitate to admit when and where the Church has been wrong with regard to men and women with same-sex attraction. We, the Church, have made mistakes and in some cases owe the gay community an apology.
  • Refrain from attacking the character of homosexuals when discussing homosexuality. Keep to the real issue: “The real issue is whether or not homosexual practice is, in and of itself, moral.”
  • Do not be discouraged if your conversations do not produce instant fruit. What we will answer to God for is speaking truth lovingly and plainly – not for how our loved one responds.
  • Be relentless in looking for every opportunity to share it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the indwelling presence of His Spirit which is the foundation needed to overcome same-sex attraction.
  • Release control. Let God decide how to bring freedom. God is the only One who can bring about change in the homosexual.
  • Let the son, daughter, and everyone know that God has a reputation for transforming trapped people with damaged sexualities. “And such were some of you” applies to all Christians who had formerly participated in homosexuality. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
  • And, remember, those entangled in sin, of course, will have weak faith, so be merciful to those who doubt. (Jude 22)

Somewhere I read, “Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.”

When Jesus Christ is “there,” life has infinite possibilities.
