Roger Spradlin and Phillip Lee Reverse Roles pt2, Audio Podcast S02E18
Roles get reversed when Pastor Roger Spradlin interviews Pastor Phillip Lee about saying goodbye to “gay” and surrendering his life to Christ Jesus 31 years ago.

Pastor Spradlin asked important and pointed questions such as: Is there a difference between the terms “gay” and “homosexual”? Did you choose to be gay? How instrumental was the Church in your process of transformation? Were you ever bullied? Do you think a Christian should attend a same-sex marriage ceremony? Am I correct that you personally witnessed the AIDS crisis unfold in 1980? What was it, what happened that ultimately caused you to say goodbye to “gay” and surrender to Christ? Is freedom from same-sex attraction instantaneous when surrendering to Christ or is it a process? Is the ultimate goal for the same-sex attracted person heterosexuality? Is the true identity of a Christian found in their sexuality or in Christ? And, much more.

These are the kind of conversations that need to take place throughout the Body of Christ on a regular basis to effectively and compassionately communicate God’s heart concerning sexual brokenness and wholeness in Christ Jesus.

Homosexuality? Who Cares? Audio Podcast S02E21
There is no doubt many Christians have been strongly influenced by the continuous parade of positive media representations of homosexuality. It does “seem” that people today increasingly approve of homosexuality as a valid life option for friends and family members. But is that truly the case?

Why are so many churches electing to remain silent on the topic of homosexuality?

The Real Crisis with Clayton Ford pt2, Audio Podcast S02E25
Dr. Clayton Ford, National Co-Director of Holy Spirit Renewal Ministries and author of Called to High Adventure: A Fresh Look at the Holy Spirit and the Spirit-Filled Life, and Pastor Phillip Lee continue their discussion and focus on questions like, How can I say I love people while allowing them to compromise in a life of sexual sin, unchallenged? How does the Church take stances on social and moral issues without driving people away? Today, any challenge offered regarding homosexual practice is often met with accusations of “intolerance”.

The Crisis in Ministry with Robert Kuyper, Audio Podcast S02E26

Pastor Kuyper offers a strong challenge to the Church to wake up and take its rightful place as ambassadors for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and specifically, to the world of sexual sinners.

Can a Homosexual Change? Audio Podcast S02E27
Can homosexuals change is a fair and important question. Does Scripture provide evidence change is possible? How is change defined and how long does it take? Who are we to believe, God, or the culture around us?

A Christ-Like Response to Homosexuality with Pete Baker pt1, Audio Podcast S02E28
Pastor Pete Baker, Senior Pastor at Fairfax Assembly of God joins Pastor Phllip Lee to discuss the question, “Which is the greater crisis we face today – homosexuality or the Authority of Scripture?”

A Christ-Like Response to Homosexuality with Pete Baker pt2, Audio Podcast S02E29
Pastor Pete Baker, Senior Pastor at Fairfax Assembly of God joins Pastor Phllip Lee to discuss the question, “Are we moving in a direction that only one belief regarding homosexuality will be accepted in America?”

Is it more important to politically defeat homosexuals than it is to see them won into the Kingdom of God?

“Biblical authority is not tyranny: We read, reflect – and reconcile ourselves with Scripture; but we never simply remake it or reject it – if we affirm its authority.” Professor Marion L. Soards

The relentless social pressure that exists to protect “gay” from discrimination has resulted in a tragically dangerous code.

While I personally deplore any and all forms of “gay-bashing” and other hate crimes against homosexuals, the extreme medical risks and the fundamental psychological problems often associated with homosexual practice, cannot be undermined or dismissed.

In America, very little is being offered which promotes the truth about homosexuality and the general public has slowly but certainly bought into the many untruths with regard to the topic of homosexuality. This did not happen by accident.

In December 1973, by a narrow vote, homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM) by the American Psychiatric Association. The vote was not based on scientific research but on political pressure from homosexual activists. So much for an individual’s right of self-determination to address their unwanted homosexual feelings and behavior.

In a nutshell, the problem is the politicization of psychiatry, psychology, and most definitely, the Bible, to the extent that the freedom to investigate and treat homosexuality has been and continues to be under serious attack.

During my 17 years as ‘gay,’ I personally witnessed far too many lives devastated and some taking their own lives over the celebration of ‘gay.’ In each and every case the ruin and carnage were not brought about by the individual trying to resolve their same-gender attraction.

Today, in America and around the world, in the name of tolerance, diversity, and equality, often the truth has been and is being suppressed regarding homosexuality. We can and we must reverse the current trend through education and understanding.

Yes, because of very real discrimination, homosexual activists created a brilliant strategic plan to gain across-the-board acceptance. Yet their plan was and is based upon a flawed paradigm to persuade people they were born with same-gender attraction and they cannot change.

This strategy has worked. But the biggest losers just may be homosexual men and women who may get everything they think they want, but will they be denied what they truly need?

Upholding Biblical sexual morality does not equal bigotry, homophobia, or hate.

Reporter: I’m really surprised you continue to believe and state that men and women with same-sex attraction can change.

Me: Why does that surprise you?

Reporter: Well, you know, with so many having debunked Reparative Therapy and Conversion Therapy.

Me: I must challenge your use of the word “debunked.” While some men and women may not have benefited from Reparative or Conversion Therapy, both offer some very good, sound and solid counsel for life. So, let’s not, as the saying goes, “Throw the baby out with the bath water.”

That said, during our 25-year history of His Way Out Ministries, we have never applied or utilized Reparative or Conversion Therapy. Being a Christian ministry, our calling, mandate and approach is taken directly from the command and calling of our Lord Jesus Christ to make disciples as found in Matthew 28:19.

You do understand Biblical Discipleship is by no means the same as Reparative or Conversion Therapy, don’t you?

Reporter: Huh?

Me: Reparative and/or Conversion Therapy is a psychological, clinical approach to resolving same-sex attraction. At His Way Out Ministries, our position and approach rests entirely upon the Authority of Scripture versus the interpretations of some of the social sciences and medicines. All His Way Out Ministries Services are centered on the Biblical foundations of compassion, integrity, and dependence on God.

Reporter: Oh, pray the gay away.

Me: I would caution you not to mock God or the power of prayer.

We believe through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the healing power of the Holy Spirit, often mediated by extended and competent ministry, prayer and a caring Christian community, the sexually broken can experience transformation and restoration towards wholeness.

And, by the way, it is our intent to extend compassionate Christian ministry for such persons while repudiating any non-loving, prejudicial attitudes that deny Christ’s unconditional love for all people and we declare such to be sin.

Reporter: Wow, I had no idea.

Me: Do you have a Bible?

Reporter: Yes.

Me: With regard to “change,” I recommend you read Mark 10:27 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-11. “Change” is not just our personal opinion or feeling. God Himself says “change” is possible.

Reporter: Hmmmm

Me: So, if you still want to disagree or argue about “change” being possible, I suggest you take it up with God. Indeed, you can argue the point with Him but you won’t win.

Reporter: Thank you for your time.

Me: Anytime.

Listen online or download all 15 Episodes of Season One.

Homosexuality: A Crisis of Truth, Audio Podcast 01
For many years, the crisis of truth we have faced and the on-going crisis is ultimately not about homosexuality. “The crisis” is the Lordship of Christ and the Authority of Scripture.

“I will praise your name for your loving kindness and your truth, for you have magnified your word above your name.” Psalm 138

The Myths of Homosexuality, Audio Podcast 02
Our second broadcast is titled “The Myths of Homosexuality” which covers questions like: Is homosexuality the worst of all sins; is homosexuality nothing more than just a choice; is homosexuality genetic; will marriage or dating fix the problem of same-sex attraction; and does tolerance mean approving of however anyone lives?

Silence Is Not An Option, Audio Podcast 03
Our third broadcast is titled “Silence Is Not An Option.” It is the clarity of the Holy Scriptures that should compel each and every faithful follower of Christ Jesus to be a light where there is darkness, rather than hiding our witness from those who need it.

Youth and Homosexuality, Audio Podcast 04
Our fourth broadcast is titled “Youth and Homosexuality.” Christian youth often find themselves caught in the middle. Do they hold to the instructions of Scripture, church, and parents or do they reject their faith convictions as outdated and accept a new morality?

Homosexuality and the Reality of Change, Audio Podcast 05
Our fifth broadcast is titled “Homosexuality and the Reality of Change.” Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, God has, is, and will be delivering men and women from the snare of same-sex attraction.

Where Does the Journey to Wholeness Begin? Audio Podcast 06
Our sixth broadcast is titled “Where Does the Journey to Wholeness Begin?” The Christian’s journey to sexual wholeness begins when you put God on the throne instead of self.

Homosexuality vs The Authority of Scripture, Audio Podcast 07
Our seventh broadcast is titled “Homosexuality vs The Authority of Scripture.” It is only through an atmosphere of hunger, utter dependency and willingness to obey God’s Word that He imparts His will and thereby empowers us to be over-comers.

Homosexuality and the Church pt1, Audio Podcast 08
Our eighth broadcast is titled “Homosexuality and the Church pt1.” Caution: Confrontation is not enough to change a heart. The heart, having been hardened through deception or rebellion or both, has to be softened. And that is the work of God alone. Ours is to speak God’s truth, trusting Him to make it alive in our hearers.

Homosexuality and the Church pt2, Audio Podcast 09
Our ninth broadcast is titled “Homosexuality and the Church pt2.” Caution: Confrontation is not enough to change a heart. The heart, having been hardened through deception or rebellion or both, has to be softened. And that is the work of God alone. Ours is to speak God’s truth, trusting Him to make it alive in our hearers.

Why I Cannot Accept the ‘Gay Christian’ Identity, Audio Podcast 10
Our tenth broadcast is titled “Why I Cannot Accept the ‘Gay Christian’ Identity.” As Christians, our relationship with God through Christ is the cornerstone of our identity. Today, many are being told, “Accept yourself and follow your heart.” However, Jesus says, “Deny yourself and follow Me.”

Now, It’s Personal! Audio Podcast 11
Our eleventh broadcast is titled “Now, It’s Personal!” Christians with gay-identified loved ones are often eager to share the Good News of Christ, but they wonder how they can do so without sounding judgmental. When someone you love is homosexual, you quickly become aware of your inability to face life’s challenges apart from the grace of God.

Letting Go, Audio Podcast 12
Our twelfth broadcast is titled “Letting Go”. As Christians, a huge challenge is giving our loved one over to the Lord. If our prayers go something like, “God, do this,” or “God, don’t allow this,” our prayers need to become, “Lord, I ask you to bring my loved one to You in any way You choose.” Letting go goes against our very nature. However, if we want God to work in the situation, we must let Him do it His way.

How Do We Love Them Like Jesus? Audio Podcast 13
Our thirteenth broadcast is titled “How Do We Love Them Like Jesus?” The Gospel of John is clear in its description of Jesus. Jesus was 100% grace and 100% truth. He never erred on one side or the other. If we are truly to represent Christ’s heart and mind to the sexually broken, we must be equally balanced in those two critical areas as well.

Questions and Answers, Audio Podcast 14
Our fourteenth broadcast is titled “Questions and Answers”. For many, homosexuality isn’t just a social issue, it’s very personal. Our “Questions and Answers” broadcast offers straightforward, godly, and compassionate insights into the subject of homosexuality by providing a series of questions that many want to ask but are often reluctant to voice.

A Christian Response to Homosexuality, Audio Podcast 15
Our fifteenth broadcast is titled “A Christian Response to Homosexuality”. The faithful Christian Church is called by God to assert its Biblical position that sexuality is God’s good gift – sexually chaste relationships are both possible and desireable – and that sexual passion is designed to be expressed only between a man and a woman in the context of a life-time marriage.

All past episodes of His Way Out Ministries Radio Broadcast are available by following THIS LINK or selecting the “Audio Podcast” category on the right.

It is by no means a secret that American culture has and continues to drift far, far from standards of sexual morality found in the Bible.

Instead of sexual standards (holy boundary lines established by God Himself) we all are to live within, our culture has embraced and continues to promote other views all fundamentally opposed to Biblical sexual morality.

None of the alternatives to God’s standards regarding human sexuality can be right unless the Bible is completely wrong.

Therefore, if the Bible is right, then any and all alternatives must be wrong.

We have all heard the saying, “The darkest hour is just before dawn.”

We are there.

The Church in America is now fully immersed in moral darkness with other around-the-world churches fully engulfed in the same because they have and are now following our example.

To a large degree, the dismissing, the disregard of bringing both truth and grace together has enabled and continues to fuel the vacuum of sexual brokenness and decadence.

Many continue to be deceived under the guise, “it just isn’t proper to discuss such issues in or around the church.”

Today, the wave upon wave of new legislation doing its utmost to fully and completely muzzle the Church has already tragically caused many to “to seek middle ground hoping to ride out troubling waters and not be caught in the wash.” A religious travesty.

Some Christian leaders foresee an imminent revival. I hope they are right.

What to do?

Return to believing the Bible and trust its inerrancy from beginning to end.

If we allow that the Bible contains errors, then we remain just a couple of steps away from allowing anything and everything.

To allow, to excuse, to make room for any form of sin based on society’s acceptance and endorsement is to challenge, question and contest the Bible’s authority in every area of life.

For some of us, World AIDS Day is not just on December 1st of each year, but rather each and every day of the year.

The phone conversation occurred in 1995. Frank, my very best and only surviving friend of a group of 22 men, called from the hospital in San Francisco. Immediately, I knew something was very wrong.

In 1985, I moved from San Francisco back to Bakersfield, when in October of that year I surrendered my life to Christ and everything got turned upside-down – actually, right-side up.

There was nothing short of a miraculous desire to get to church and remain in church. The only thing I wanted to read was the Bible, attend classes and always be among Christian men and women, worship, and talk, talk, talk, talk, about Jesus.

Occasionally, I would talk to Frank on the phone to check on how life was going. However, our conversations became more and more strained because all I wanted to talk about was the Bible and what was going on at church. Frank, on the other hand, wanted to talk about the party last night and all that went on.

Drifting apart we most definitely were but continued to maintain a long-distance connection if only to hear one another’s voice for a few seconds. We had been close good friends for many years in San Francisco.

One afternoon I received a phone call at work from Frank. His voice was extremely weak but he still managed to say, “Phillip, we don’t understand what has happened to you but you have found something, and whatever it is, keep it up. Keep it up because you have found something. Do it for me and the others. Whatever you do don’t ever come back to this. Promise me, Philip.”

I promise, Frank.

Two days after my last phone conversation with Frank, his mother called to tell me he had passed away.

So, so many are gone, and they left much too soon.

I made a promise. A promise I intend to keep.

How is it that many American Christians consider sharing the Gospel as an optional extra? For the sake of clarity, by sharing the Gospel I am referring to something much more than a post on Facebook. And, for further clarification, sharing the Gospel is not to proclaim or advance the claims of a church, of a nation, of an ideology, but of Jesus Himself.

How is it possible to acknowledge Jesus as Lord if we take no notice of what He has told us to do?

Christians, all Christians, are to “…declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were no people but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10)

America and the Church are now facing a challenge, if not a test, which questions our ability and resilience to stand against internal and external forces which threaten to further divide and pull apart. On a much, much deeper level, it comes down to every Christian (a faithful follower of all the teachings of Christ Jesus) willing to make hard choices?

In today’s world, we cannot afford to sit back and hope that the relatively few full-time ministers of the Word accomplish the task alone. The fulfillment of Christ’s great command to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15) is the shared responsibility of every individual who calls Christ Savior and Lord.

As a history student, I am recalling that during the Depression people clearly understood the serious choices before them: pull your hair out and jump out of a window, as some stockbrokers did after the crash in 1929 or unite and work together to see things change, restored and improve.

Change, true change in America and the Church will take place when we surrender to a unifying sense of a clear enemy. To neglect or dismiss the existence of the anti-God force the Bible calls Satan, the devil, Beelzebub, and the prince of this world, is to make allowance for evil to advance and thrive. There is a devil and he is out to spoil and mar God’s world in every way he can.

Call me a dreamer but I continue to believe in the greatness of America and the power and influence of God’s vehicle to reach wounded, broken, hurting humanity – the Church. That said, I remain a realist knowing if people remain unwilling to break with the habits of the past, rethink the future, and act anew, we will no doubt witness further divide and fall.

A mission, any mission for Christ Jesus involves unity. It would be a very, very wonderful thing for the world to see that what unites the Christian community is so much greater than what divides us.

The question I pose is not meant to be blunt or insensitive.

Are you a Christian?

If your answer is “Yes!” please do not be selfish with the Gospel.

The Apostle Paul said to the Corinthians, “If our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the likeness of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:3-4)

Clearly, those who do not know Christ are perishing. They have not perished yet, but they are on their way. Men, women, and children are perishing, captive, and blind to both their predicament and to the Good News of Jesus Christ. Ultimately, this is all about people. Men and women are lost without Jesus Christ.

Psalm 16:11 says, “In thy presence there is fulness of joy, in thy right hand are pleasures for evermore.” Indeed, these are difficult and challenging times. However, there is no joy on earth to compare with that of leading an individual to Christ.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me” (John 14:6).

Today, the change many hope and pray for in our world today will only come about through our willingness to pay the price for it. It will require each and every one of us leaving the safety and comfort of the church.

Yes, our obedience to and for the Gospel will bring us into conflict with the principalities and powers of this world. However, if we are truly going to be bearers of the Good News, we must always be sensitive and kind to others, even though we might disagree with them.

Conflicts are absolutely an inevitable part of life. How we handle and resolve them will demonstrate the extent to which we understand the richness of the Gospel and God’s reconciling love.

You and I are not here at this time by chance. God has brought each of us here for a purpose. I hope and I pray God the Father will challenge and inspire each of us to be a more faithful and effective witness to Jesus Christ in the midst of a world that does not know Him.

“Not by might nor by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord Almighty.” (Zechariah 4:6)

In America and in a world that remains starved for heroes and leaders, in a world that remains saturated by debates and opinion polls, I remain comforted in knowing the Bible continues to point beyond “us” to the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Today, the ultimate and obvious question remains not, “What is the answer?” It is, “Who is the answer?”
