Where there’s confusion, there’s a crying need for clarity. And since few subjects are as fraught with confusion as the subject of homosexuality, this interview with Pastor Phillip Lee, “Such Were Some of You,” provides a welcome and much-needed voice. The podcast is a direct, easy-view and listen to the many subjects this issue often raises and will leave you better equipped to discuss same-sex behavior from a Biblical perspective.

Not always, but too often, “evolving and/or enlightened” points to or depicts an individual that views same-sex attracted men and women as born gay and while reaching out with compassion consciously dismisses and sacrifices holiness and righteousness in the process.

Today, within the Christian community, there is a great divide over homosexuality. While some in the Christian community state that homosexuality is an abomination and completely reject homosexual men and women, others believe homosexuality is wonderful and encourage homosexual behavior. Those encouraging homosexual practice have all but reinvented theology with their newfound theology being “pro-gay theology.”

For the most part, those revising the Scriptures to support homosexual practice have largely revised certain passages in light of “new and supposed” scientific evidence. Such as, ‘We now understand that people are born homosexual, and therefore we should endorse both homosexual behavior and relationships.’ Any attempt to state the Scriptures clearly communicate homosexual men and women are born that way is a blatant misuse and contradiction of Scripture.

Frankly, any endorsement or condemnation of homosexuality misses the mark entirely. Today, the Church remains in desperate need of clarifying its view of the individual struggling with same-gender attraction.

Today, while many church and denominational doctrines still teach and promote the biblical view of sexuality – marriage is meant for one man and one woman, and all sex outside of marriage is incompatible with Christian teaching and conduct – others are lowering the bar and conforming to a rapidly changing social trend of the acceptance of homosexuality and incorporating those beliefs into church doctrine. Revising theology on the topic of homosexuality has become fashionable citing ‘old ways are not applicable to new understandings; therefore, we must conform to a more modern view.

Many churches and denominations have thankfully repented of their harsh treatment of homosexuals but have also allowed the pendulum to swing to the opposite extreme – acceptance of both sin and sinner. How is it that today many just find it easier to go to the extreme left or right, rather than committing to finding a Biblical resolution to the crisis we face regarding homosexuality and related issues?

As a result, the divide that most definitely exists within the Church regarding homosexuality continues to grow. If you are not condemning then you are immediately put in the liberal camp. Very few churches have yet to realize there is another way. Neither condemnation nor acceptance of their sin is helpful to the person caught in the dilemma of same-gender attraction. The way out of the intense battle of homosexuality is often a long process that most definitely requires love, understanding, and discipleship from and by the Church.

Having once sat on the other side of the fence (Gay is good!), I can personally attest to the fact and reality the Church has treated homosexual persons abominably. In many, many respects, we the Church owe the gay community an enormous apology. That said, instead of repenting to the gay community, many churches and denominations are throwing the baby out with the bath water by revising theology without truly understanding what drives homosexual behavior.

Instead of taking advantage of becoming educated about same-gender attraction, they are succumbing to political pressure and giving in to social trends by endorsing homosexual behavior. The bottom line – everyone loses! While an abundance of homosexual men and women think they are finally getting what they want and deserve, will this tactic truly give them what they need?

While I have stated it before, I believe it needs repeating – The Church must not underestimate itself, it holds the only answer there is to this difficult issue. While we continue to say that God can do the impossible, do we still believe it?

Ultimately, by pursuing acceptance through revising theology on homosexuality, special legislation, and the relentless spin(s) on homosexuality by the media, men and women struggling with homosexuality and lesbianism will never, ever experience the love and peace they so desperately seek and deserve.

There is no doubt homosexual activists have devised a brilliant strategic plan to gain greater and greater acceptance. Much of the plan has been based upon and remains based upon ‘that they were born with same-gender attraction and change is not possible.’

Tragically, the strategy has been and is working.

We can and must reverse current trends regarding homosexuality through education and understanding. Indeed, acceptance is a vital issue to all people and we must be accepting of the wounded person, but we can never accept a theology or a way of life that flies in the face of God’s Word. Frankly, to lack compassion in this area is to be out of step with God.

We cannot and we must not allow any misguided desire to extend mercy to potentially cause us, The Church, to surrender our right to judge right from wrong. It is time to bring understanding and clarity to the issue of homosexuality. It is only through understanding and compassion that we can resolve the many controversies and confusion surrounding homosexuality. It is up to you and me to reach out in love realizing the homosexual issue will never be solved by politics, science, or the media.

Ultimately, revising theology to support or endorse homosexual behavior in any form or to any degree minimizes The Church as the last bastion of hope to the man or woman with unwanted same-sex attraction.

At the next “Straight Talk” meeting on Saturday, April 8, 2023, beginning at 9:00 am, we will turn our attention to and discuss, “What Are We Missing About Homosexuality?”

The details of your situation may be different. But I will bet your family and mine have a lot in common, so please believe me when I say I’ve been there.

I have both witnessed and survived extremes such as the whitewashing of the sin of homosexual practice as well as the cruel mistreatment of the sinner – practiced by far too many people for too many years, as well as the mean-spiritedness so many people, both Christian and non-Christian display toward homosexuals and, on the other extreme, the blasphemous compromises a number of churches and denominations are making as they embrace homosexual practice and reject Biblical authority.

Ultimately, it is the family members and friends who are so often miserably caught in the middle.

At “Straight Talk” we seek a Christlike response to our LGBTQ-identified family members, friends, neighbors, and co-workers so may what be said of Christ Jesus may be said of us as well – that we are, as He was, full of grace and truth.

We will turn our attention to and discuss: Is homosexuality nothing more than a choice? Can a child raised in a Christian home develop homosexually, just as a child from a non-Christian family? What is the ideal response to homosexuality? What word best describes how most in the LGBTQ community view the Christian church? Is it true not one Scripture in the Bible encourages or promotes homosexual practice? and more.

“Straight Talk” meetings are held faithfully on the 2nd Saturday of each month at Rock Harbor Church, 3633 Rosedale Hwy., Bakersfield, CA – www.rockharborchurch.net

Shut up?

Christian, our culture is relentlessly telling you to shut up. What are you going to do about it?

Today the temptation to minimize, revise, if not disregard the importance of doctrine, critical to the Christian faith but offensive to the world, has slithered into every crevasse of our culture.

It is one thing to stand in judgment of any number of various behaviors today as morally unacceptable; it is quite another in terms of how to respond. Crystal clear distinction needs to be drawn between men and women struggling with unwanted broken identities and behavior versus individuals actively pursuing, living, and promoting a behavior or identity God has deemed unacceptable and sin.

Pastor Phillip Lee

Somehow, some way, what has slithered into the Church today is the misguided notion we Christians are to be out and about saving souls. We are not to save souls – we are to disciple them. Saving souls is God’s business and His alone. As Ambassadors for God, I cannot think of any greater way to honor and glorify God than to reproduce, if you will, men and women after His own image.

That said, a huge problem exists within the Church today. Too often, sharing of the Good News has been shrunk to the dimensions of postings on Facebook and within church walls alone.

Evangelism, sharing the Good News, and witnessing for Christ Jesus is not the same as filling pews. Sharing of the Good News can be and should be communicated in a variety of ways – and not necessarily, or even primarily, in church.

Personally, I fail to see how anyone can realistically acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord when choosing to ignore and disregard the command of Jesus Himself to go into all the world and make disciples. Peter reminds us, all Christians are to, “declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were no people but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10)

Sharing the Gospel, telling people about Jesus should be as natural to a Christian as breathing. If not, I humbly submit something is terribly, terribly wrong.

It is an undeniable fact the social, cultural, and political fabric of America has been rewoven by a select and misguided few. Indeed, it is correct to state that much of American society is now fully in the grip of political correctness. Any public challenge or expression of disagreement with any aspect of the gay community, the transgender community, or various other communities, will be met with the Christian community being labeled as ‘bashers.’

However, God placed you here for a purpose and He desires to use your obedience in sharing Him to influence and impact not only this generation but generations to come. All He expects of us is obedience. To share openly, unashamedly, lovingly, without reservation, the greatest news ever announced:

God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life.

God’s love and His plan are available to each and every person and to each, every, and any community.

And, here’s the bottom line: Sharing the Gospel is simply taking the initiative to share Christ Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit, and leaving the results to God.

I am more convinced than ever that the Word of God is still the answer, and that it remains exactly what it’s always claimed to be.
