We must never be ashamed of the Gospel – and we are told to proclaim its precepts. But how do you and I stand up to an increasingly hostile culture that demands our silence?

We respond with both truth and grace.

Will we faithfully in pulpits, homes, and our lives profess and steward the Word of God without adding to or detracting from it?

With a New Year fast approaching, His Way Out Ministries will continue to affirm Biblical truth – not culture – in 2023.

Homosexual advocates have been very creative in their interpretation of Scripture in an attempt to validate the practice of homosexuality.

Many homosexual advocates frequently impart their own personal meanings into biblical texts in an attempt to make personal experience the ultimate test of truth rather than the Truth and Authority of Scripture. However, the Bible does not condone the practice of homosexuality in any of its forms, but in fact condemns it as a damaging sin.

To those that state “The Bible doesn’t condemn homosexuality,” or “The Bible doesn’t say anything about homosexuality,” they usually don’t mean that homosexuality is never mentioned in the Bible, what they normally mean is one of the following: Homosexuality as practiced or viewed today never appears in Scripture, or even though the Bible does speak against homosexuality, what the Bible says does not apply to present day situations.

I remain amazed at how some people today make surprising claims about the biblical attitude toward homosexual behavior. As an example, there are those who would have us believe certain biblical characters were homosexual. Not one individual is named in the entire Word of God as a homosexual. While there are those that would have us believe that Cain and Abel, David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, even Jesus and the “beloved disciple, or Paul and Timothy,” were alleged homosexual pairs, is at best a flimsy, if not a quantum leap by some pro-gay apologists to claim biblical support for their cause and way of living.

When considered objectively, the Scriptures are not silent concerning homosexuality. Within the totality of Scripture, the practice of homosexuality is always mentioned as a violation of God’s divine intent for human sexuality. The major references to homosexuality in Scripture are: Leviticus 18:22; 20:13; Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:10; Genesis 19; 2 Peter 2:7 and Jude 7. Pro-gay apologists and theologians have interpreted each of these texts in such a way as to eliminate their applicability to the current ethical and moral debate on the issue.

The Holy Scriptures clearly and repeatedly condemn any violation of God’s divine order, whether through immoralities (1 Corinthians 6:16-20) or through perversion of sexual roles (Romans 1:18-32; Leviticus 18:27; 20:13). Today, The Church is continually being challenged to adjust its beliefs and theology regarding sex, to bend, if not bow down to, opinion polls and the many that have embraced science, feelings, notions, and experience over The Truth and Authority of Scripture.

There is no way biblically to arrive at any other conclusion than the practice of homosexuality is a perversion of divine order. Period.

Furthermore, to stand and condemn homosexuality in all its forms is not a symptom of homophobia or narrow-minded bigotry. It is to stand on the side of righteousness and truth and to be in obedience to the One who said, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16) For The Church, God the Father is the only One we should seek to please.

Today, far too many are dismissing and departing from the scriptural model of Christian sexuality. Almost on a weekly basis, I hear, “I know what the Scriptures have to say about living within God’s holy boundary lines regarding sexual expression; however, I am going to follow my feelings and emotions rather than The Truth I know.” What has happened to the fact and reality that God is Holy and calls all of His followers to holiness which points directly to the fact that He is a God to be feared as well.

Christians are the temple of the living God. God has said: “I will be their God and they will be my people. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Cor. 6:16-18)

Considering God’s promises, every Christ-follower must purse godliness and holiness and abstain from anything and everything that seeks to contaminate body and spirit.

The Church has always been, as it remains today, God’s vehicle to preserve His Truth and defend His Church against error (Matthew 5:13; 1 Timothy 3:15). Today, other immoralities are aggressively pounding away at the Church’s door, such as pornography, abortion, rampant divorce, and cohabitation. Are we, The Church, to give way before these because the general population approves them?

Yes, today, it really does seem that anything goes. There is no right or wrong. Not only this, but many would have us believe that personal morals are equated with legal rights. Today, sex is looked on more and more as a constitutionally guaranteed right – a right to fulfill one’s biological drives however one see fit. When we commit sexual sin, which is war against our own body, as well as sin against God, we bring negative consequences upon our soul and spirit. The Apostle Peter made this point in 1 Peter 2:11, when he pleaded: “I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.”

As a Christian, meaning I embrace the totality and Authority of Scripture, I could never as a faithful follower of Christ Jesus, encourage, endorse, promote or validate the practice of homosexuality in any form. To do so would be a blatant misuse and contradiction of Scripture.

History dictates, lest we forget, what we, The Church tolerate today will be practiced tomorrow. With holiness and truth as our motivation, we, The Church, must be very careful not to adopt the customs of the world.

Ultimately, when a notion, theory, feeling, or personal opinion contradicts the Holy Scriptures, it should be rejected.

I was born at night, but it wasn’t last night.

Now that the Respect for Marriage Act has been signed into law, by not accepting or affirming same-sex marriage, now places you in the same category as a racist.

Look at the wording for the Respect for Marriage Act: Public Law No: 117-8…

This act provides statutory authority for same-sex and interracial marriages.

“Specifically, the act replaces provisions that define, for purposes of federal law, marriage as between a man and a woman and spouse as a person of the opposite sex with provisions that recognize any marriage between two individuals that is valid under state law. (The Supreme Court held that the current provisions were unconstitutional in United States v. Windsor in 2013.)

The act also replaces provisions that do not require states to recognize same-sex marriages from other states with provisions that prohibit the denial of full faith and credit or any right or claim relating to out-of-state marriages on the basis of sex, race, ethnicity, or national origin. (The Supreme Court held that state laws barring same-sex marriages were unconstitutional in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015; the Court held that state laws barring interracial marriages were unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia in 1967.) The act allows the Department of Justice to bring a civil action and establishes a private right of action for violations.”

My personal commentary…

Apart from the broader goal of legitimizing homosexuality, the alleged aim of all gay rights initiatives, is to protect homosexuals from discrimination based solely on their sexual orientation. Too often, gay rights are presented and promoted as an issue of civil rights with the gay community likening themselves to African Americans or other minorities who have suffered under discriminatory laws and social policies.

Is such an argument and analogy really justified?

Have homosexuals really been the object of prejudice and discrimination in the same way as African Americans?

The color of one’s skin is not a matter of choice; that is genetically determined. However, homosexual behavior is not genetically determined.

Therefore, it is one thing to say that we believe in civil rights for all regardless of one’s skin color. It is quite another matter to say that we believe in civil rights for all regardless of one’s behavior.

Homosexuals frequently speak of themselves as if their being gay is fundamental to who they are as persons and as a community. Ultimately, they are in effect defining themselves by their gayness. As a result, they set themselves off as a separate class, a group needing, if not demanding, special attention and deference.

Are we as a society really being asked to connect and equate civil rights and homosexual rights as the same?

As a member of the gay community for 17 years, I was never denied the right to vote, own property, or attend the college or university of my choice. History clearly dictates and reflects that African Americans cannot say the same.

Therefore, comparing homosexual rights to the civil rights of African Americans is shallow and ultimately insulting. Homosexuals, as a class, have not suffered discrimination as African Americans.

The attempt to blur the lines that homosexual practice is clearly about morals by comparing a behavior to an issue of civil rights is dishonest and misleading. A significant number of homosexuals do not suffer from economic or other key forms of discrimination as do African Americans.

As citizens of the United States, homosexuals have all the afforded rights extended to every citizen. These fundamental rights include: the right to vote, the First Amendment rights of free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of petition, and freedom of religion.

Ultimately, there is no socially compelling reason to grant special status to homosexuals and there should be no comparison to the history and present day of African Americans.

There is no doubt, no question that closely tied to the quest for power by gay activists is their crusade for acceptance, the desire and demand to gain society’s approval on homosexual behavior.

Homosexuals have the right, as do others, to believe that homosexual behavior should be accepted as normal.

They do not have the right to demand everyone agree with them.

Today, the evangelical church that knows how to respond properly to homosexuality is more the exception than the rule. Christian leadership should be preaching from the pulpit that homosexuality is not a worse sin than idolatry or adultery or greed (1 Corinthians 6:9-11), and those struggling with homosexuality can talk about this in a safe environment of love and friendship and accountability.

“…although healing many people of their physical ailments, Jesus often indicated that the forgiveness of their sins was the true gift.”

Even those with a limited knowledge of the Bible will remember that Jesus was scorned and ridiculed for spending time with what were considered the “worst” sinners and the most “unclean” people of His day.

However, Jesus was always determined to focus on those who had the deepest need for Him. As He said, “He was sent not for the healthy, but for the sick,” (Matthew 9:12) and He had little tolerance for those who failed to see their own brokenness.

Clearly, Jesus hung out with sinners. He dined with prostitutes and tax collectors. He interacted with adulterers and harlots. He touched those who were ravaged by socially unacceptable disease.

Simply loving them, He listened as much or more than He talked, and His compassion for them and His understanding of their hurt was clear.

If we are to reach the individual struggling with same-gender attraction or the gay community, we must do the same. A very simple scanning of the gospels offers a good picture of several attitudes and actions that characterize Jesus’ way of relating to those who did not know Him and who were lost in their sin.

Jesus routinely broke religious and cultural boundaries. Jesus healed people on the Sabbath, He entered the homes of undesirable people, and He spoke publicly to people the religious leaders ignored. Clearly, Jesus sacrificed tradition and reputation for the sake of the lives He sought to impact.

Boy, now there’s a lesson: being more attentive and mindful about our character rather than our reputation.

Jesus began His interaction with sinners by loving them first. In other words, he had a genuine love for them and wanted to get to know them. Remember?

If we are going to be effective in speaking into an individual’s life, we must first establish relationship. Jesus was all about building relationships with sinners. Certainly, Jesus, being Jesus, had quicker relational success than we might have, but His example in getting to know people and letting them see Him is vital for our evangelism efforts.

Jesus physically touched people. In other words, He wasn’t afraid to get a bit dirty. He touched lepers, blind people, and prostitutes.

Frankly, I believe physical touch was Jesus’ physical manifestation of His love for people.

In His day, it was considered unclean to even be in proximity with such people. His own disciples often tried to keep “those people” away from Him. But Jesus not only didn’t avoid those people, He sought them out. And it was His touch that healed them both physically and spiritually.

Jesus offered people something better than their sin. He pulled their attention away from their sin and enabled them to consider and focus on what He could give. He told the woman at the well that He had living water, and then He offers her Himself.

After He saved the adulterous woman from being stoned, He offered her freedom from condemnation. After the harlot anointed His feet, He forgave her sin and saved her for eternity. Now, catch this. While Jesus healed many people of their physical ailments, He often indicated that the forgiveness of their sins was the true gift, even more so than the physical healing they so desired. If we are going to reach the homosexual community, we must offer them something better than their sin.

Jesus’ own examples provide us with several practical tools for reaching our gay and lesbian friends, neighbors, etc.

First, please take this to heart – you have permission to love your gay friends or family members.

And, frankly, you have more than permission, you have a mandate from the Lord.
