At His Way Out Ministries, we continue to believe the Church remains God’s vehicle to reach wounded, broken, hurting humanity. In a world that is rapidly spinning toward accepting everything and tolerating anything, we, the Church, must be very, very careful. God has and He is setting opportunity before us. The Gospel must be the priority for the homosexual – just as it must be for each and every faithful follower of Christ Jesus.

Because we all have been inundated through the media, movies, television, schools, politics, Internet and tragically in some cases by various faiths promoting – “once gay always gay” and “can’t change” – the Church must educate itself, and replace the many lies and myths about homosexuality being campaigned by pro-gay activists, with the real Scriptural truths and facts about same-sex attraction.

Therefore, because there is a world of difference between “telling” a person something is wrong versus “reaching” to a person, and to continue our raising awareness, educating, and encouraging the Body of Christ to minister to men and women with unwanted same-sex attraction, we offer some of the most frequently asked questions regarding homosexuality with responses which are balanced in both truth and grace.

Question: I have a hunch someone I know is struggling with homosexuality. What is the best way to approach him?
Answer: Caution; when approaching anyone based upon a hunch, the potential for doing more harm than good is considerable.

Question: If I befriend a gay person, am I possibly sending a message of condoning their behavior?
Answer: First, check your motivation. Are you reaching out to a man or woman struggling with same-sex attraction to minister to their humanity or to support their homosexuality? Having compassion for any individual struggling with same-sex attraction does not mean you are condoning their behavior.

Question: How do I introduce a gay person to Christ?
Answer: Why should ministry to a gay person be approached differently than ministry to anyone else? Witnessing to someone should never be conditioned or considered on an individual’s difference.

Question: What Scripture passages about homosexuality do I need to be familiar with?
Answer: Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, and Romans 1:26-28 to name just a few. However, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 is the passage used most frequently to encourage those struggling with same-sex attraction to refute the arguments of those who do not believe change is possible.

Question: What should I be aware of when reaching out to the gay community?
Answer: First, be aware that many in the gay community do not trust the Church (Christians). Also, the gay community does not understand most Christian terminology. So, stay away from clichés such as “love the sinner but hate the sin.” Be real. Share what Christ has done in your life.

Question: If God is love, then what’s wrong with a man loving a man or a woman loving a woman?
Answer: Yes, Scripture clearly teaches that “God is love” (1 John 4:16). But the verse cannot be twisted or used to support a behavior that clearly contradicts other verses that have established God’s boundaries regarding sexual intimacy. Any sexual expression between two people of the same gender is strictly prohibited by Scripture.

Practical Points

  • See your friend/loved one as an individual with a same-sex attraction problem rather than a homosexual.
  • Point your friend/loved one to Jesus, not to heterosexuality.
  • You do not have to be an expert on homosexuality to have a godly influence.
  • Offer hope and good tidings, not just the statement that a certain lifestyle is sinful.
  • The expectation of our friend or loved one to be honest and transparent with us requires our openness about our own story of brokenness and redemption.

“If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at the moment attacking, the I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is tested.” Martin Luther
